Tips for advocating for more inclusive technology access for people living with type 2 diabetes (T2D)

Please join the diabetes community in their advocacy efforts by writing an email to your local MP. If you’re not sure where to start or how to begin, consider these tips:

They don’t know diabetes and don’t know details, so start with the basics and keep it to the point: I am writing about an issue affecting me as a person with diabetes and that issue is the inequitable access of CGM for people living with type 2 diabetes. Subsidised CGM is currently only available for people living with type 1 diabetes in Australia.

Be clear about the issue: People living with type 2 diabetes should be able to access the best standard of care available, including CGM technology. While it may be available without a subsidy, this is too expensive for many people with diabetes, meaning a management option is being removed. This is driving a disparity between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and those who live with it.

Explain how that impacts you: As a person living with type 2 diabetes, I am required to manage my diabetes every day. CGM is a technology option that can make it more achievable for me to achieve better health outcomes and assist me in managing my diabetes. CGM can provide insights, data and a safety net like nothing else.

Be clear about your ask: I am asking for you to advise what the Government is doing to address this matter, and how it is working to resolve the concerns of many people with diabetes who are unable to afford this gold standard management option for our diabetes.

Express gratitude: Thank the recipient for their attention to this important issue and express anticipation for their response and support in advocating for more inclusive technology access for individuals living with T2D.

Lastly, don’t ever believe that you are not going to be part of the movement that makes change. The diabetes community is loud, collaborative and it achieves big things. It’s how we got insulin pump consumables on the NDSS and how we got Fiasp back on the PBS. The diabetes community is incredibly powerful, and everyone that gets involved has a huge impact that so many are grateful for. We've achieved a lot for the T1D community in recent times. It's time for us to step up and support the T2D community, too.
