Teresa Di Franco

Credentialled Diabetes Educator

Teresa is a Registered Pharmacist and Credentialled Diabetes Educator. She has been practising at High Wycombe Pharmacy as a pharmacist and Diabetes Educator for 5 years. Teresa is currently the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia WA Branch President and represent pharmacist diabetes educators on the ADEA Clinical committee, WA Health Network Endocrine Executive advisory group and the Curtin University Diabetes Education Course review advisory committee. She has taken on these roles as she would like to have some input into the direction diabetes caretaker in the future to ensure it is accessible, affordable and of a high standard for all people living with diabetes.

Teresa is passionate about making living with diabetes as less stressful as possible and providing people with the most up to date technology. In the last five years she has been working in community pharmacy and has chosen to specialise in the field of diabetes after personally watching many members of her family live with various forms of diabetes and some eventually succumbing to the complications of diabetes. She has worked with people living with both type 1 diabetes and 2 diabetes. As a pharmacist Teresa is able to provide extra services such as medication review, reconciliation and counselling on the correct use of medications. She has been trained in both the Living with Diabetes and DESMOND group education programs.

Since commencing private practice Teresa has noticed a gap in the community for easily accessible diabetes education services for people living with type 1 diabetes particularly young adults. With the constantly changing world of diabetes technology it is important we are offering the most advanced devices and are providing up to date information to people, to ensure living with type 1 diabetes is as comfortable as possible while we wait for a cure. She strongly believes diabetes education is changing to consider the psychosocial impact as well as physical impact diabetes has on a person. It no longer follows the model of focusing only on blood glucose levels and numbers but instead we are part of the person’s support team helping them achieve the goals they set. Perth Diabetes Care was established to provide a full support team for people living with diabetes in the primary care environment outside of what currently exists.
